RASC North Africa Question
« on: Friday 25 March 22 11:36 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to research my grandfathers military details. I know he was in the RASC in Tunisia in 1943, he then went on to Italy. In 1944-5 he was in Norway. My question is he was in the RASC but he had a cap badge and blazer badges for the Northamptonshire regiment and he spoke about the 8th army, I've tried to research but get more confused, would the RASC been part of the Northamptonshire regiment or would he of transferred to them. All the documents I have put him in the RASC but never mention the Northamptonshire Regiment. I've added two pictures which I have. Any help much appreciated.

Do you have a copy of his service record from the MOD?

I sent away for it 10 months ago but we haven't heard anything back. It confused me because from the research I've done the Northamptonshire regiment is an infantry unit but he was RASC.

Covid has caused a very long wait for the records but things are improving.  Fingers crossed that they turn up soon and, hopefully, makes things clearer for you.

Good evening,

It could be that he was in the Northamptonshires first. But some men who had been wounded or became ill were downgraded as unfit for frontline service. However they were still regarded as fit enough for rear echelon duties so would be transferred to something like the RASC.

This happened to my uncle who was RE in North Africa. After he was wounded he was transferred to RASC as a driver. But oddly he was then attached to the RE as a driver and went on to serve at Monte Casino. Even more odd was the fact that it was the same unit that he had been taken out of.
