Old Photos Of Stockport Cheshire
« on: Sunday 27 March 22 10:53 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can someone please help me identify the exact location of where these 2 old photos of my Late Father were taken?

They were taken in Stockport in the 1980's.

Stockport 1980's

Hi,

Does anyone recognise the location please? It's somewhere in Stockport and was taken around the 1980's.

I hope the gate, houses in the background and the strange mini steeple type thing on the roof can be recognised by someone?

There's a chance all of this no longer exists now due demolition/refurbishment etc.

Any help on the location would be greatly appreciated.

Hi when I saw your pictures I thought it looked a little bit like Hazel Grove

Or maybe in the Davenport or Bramhall Lane area? But there's really very little to go on in the photos. Do you have any possible addresses from phone books, electoral registers etc?

I'm not seeing a gate, only a fence, and that, together with the scale of the garden, might suggest a public park or similar. However, in one of the photos in particular, the man appears to be standing on the flower bed, which would be unusual in that setting.

The small spire-like thing might be on something like a school or a church hall. It looks to be early 20th century or older, so it should be marked on a detailed street map such as you can find at the National Library of Scotland (https://maps.nls.uk/index.html) - they cover England too. That might give a few places to concentrate on, and with any luck, you might be able to check them out on street view.

Hi Mark,

Unfortunately the only information I have is Stockport and there was another photo which I've identified which was taken in Cale Green Park. These 2 photos don't seem to be from there, so I would assume they were taken within the same vicinity at best.

For what it's worth, Cale Green Park is in the area I was thinking of....

How about any other green/public/open spaces nearby? I do think it would be worth checking the NLS maps - assuming it is a park, it might be fairly easy to pick out a few spots where there's a park and a church hall (etc) next to each other.

I've had a look at the link but I'm not sure on how to use it to be honest. I have downloaded the Google Earth Map instead and had a look at the area you mentioned.

This location seems close to it and it's right next to the park too. It also has the fence (not gate sorry).

If it is correct, then the "white house" might be nearby but haven't found anything yet.

Try this for a link to maps for Stockport:

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/find/#zoom=16&lat=53.39325&lon=-2.15285&layers=102&b=1&z=0&point=53.39234,-2.15442

This is the key map - select an area then pick a map on the right. In one of the boxes on the left you can select different scales - the link is for those at 6" to a mile, but there are larger ones too, eg 25" to a mile.

I've just had a look at the place you've shown. On old maps, there's a club at the NE corner of the park, which appears to be the site now occupied by Kids Planet. However, looking at your picture, and with street view, the gables on the houses all point back towards the park. On the one we're trying to identify, the roof behind the "spire" (the end house?) doesn't have a gable like that, just a roof line parallel with the road beyond, so I don't think this is it.

I'm a bit out of ideas now. I used to live near there and drove through that area from time to time, but not any more. We do have one or two members round there, I think, so maybe one of them will see this and come up with something.
