Date please, CdV of man by Gibson of Hexham
« on: Monday 28 March 22 17:44 BST (UK) »
I'd welcome opinions on the date of this one please.

My Jayne Shrimpton book leads me towards a mid-1860's date, but the cardstock seems rather later than that  :-\

(No restoration needed, and I do have full biographical details on Gibson)

Isn't Gibson the one who used rounded corners before 1870?  I'll look up the detailed backs*

I think Ms Shrimpton and you are correct

* Add -The design got slightly more complex after 1868** so mid 1860s -1868

           **  I made a typo and suggested 1968  initially  ;D :-X

Two things intrigue me about this one, it's the wrong way round and it's unusual to see an oval mount for the era.

I'm sure that Shrimpton talks about ovals being introduced around then.

I think he was ahead of his time in many ways, the earliest one I have seen in my books is 1872....
"Oval Frame - An 1870s giveaway"
It says....This look had it's roots in the oval frames from Daguerreotype days, tintype sleeves and the cartouche artwork from the 1860s."

Thank you both for your thoughts - I was pleased to be approximately correct!

Yes, Gibson did use rounded corner CdV cards at times in the 1860's.

This is the only Gibson I've got (so far) which appears to have some sort of 'landscape' as a background.

My Jayne Shrimpton book suggested that the use of the 'oval medallion' as in this CdV began in the late 1860's.

I aquired this CdV in the same batch as the one at the start of this thread (thank you ebay  ;D ) also in an oval and on the identical cardstock. To me it looks like mid-1860's - would you agree?
