Help in finding Great Grandfather's birth
« on: Tuesday 29 March 22 17:52 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have my great grandfather, aged 13, on the 1871 census with his family but I cannot find a birth record for him or any of his other siblings except the youngest.  I'm assuming that his father on the census wasn't actually his biological father.  I have tried to find him with just his mother and siblings on the 1861 census but haven't been able to locate them.  Any suggestions as to how to locate him and find his birth record please.

William Buntin aged 42
Eliza Buntin aged 42 (nee Porter).
Thomas Buntin aged 17
Charles Buntin aged 13
William Buntin aged 9
Martha Buntin aged 8
Sarah Buntin aged 5
Henry Buntin aged 3

All born in St Pancras.  William and Eliza didn't marry until 1865.  Surname is actually Bunting.

If you've tried and failed, then the next thing to do is give the details of the 1871 on here and let us have a look for you

I cannot find a birth record for him or any of his other siblings except the youngest.

It was not unusual for births not to be registered at this time.  The registration system was tightened up in the late 1870's, perhaps that is why you can only find the birth of the youngest child

Hi
I thought that was Eliza's name from the marriage, and Henry's birth reg, and so looked for Porter instead of Bunting.
One of the Pancras workhouse admissions.
18 Feb 1861
Eliza Porter 30
+ her two children Thomas 5, Charles, 2
Residence 5 West Str Bermondsey

Charles sent to Hanwell school 15 March
Thomas may have gone there too?

William Porter born in the workhouse 9 April 1861
All discharged 7 May.

On ancestry (may be on FamilySearch too)

So Eliza should be in Pancras workhouse in the 1861 census.
Charles at the Hanwell school.

Ancestry have Charles "Pater", 2, at Hanwell.
Piece 781 folio 149 page 26

Looking at the image, it probably is Porter.
Just says Infant. No place of birth given.
