John Law curate Crosstone Chapel 1753
« on: Friday 01 April 22 16:35 BST (UK) »
I’m curious if there is a way to search the church records of the time as to a specific Reverend/curate John Law who first appears as the curate at Crosstone with the baptism of his son John in 1753 and is married to Sarah. He died in 1768 as did his son James. Both are buried at Crosstone. My question is, is there a record of his being ordained, or attending a school to become the curate of Crosstone?

I hope I’ve done the link correctly. He went to Cross Stone in 1750 and died there 1769

Unfortunately the link didn’t work. I now know he was there in 1750 and I thank you for that. I believe, but haven’t been able to prove, that his wife and children moved to Boston, MA in or about 1770.

From the clergy database:

Studied at Oxford (Brasenose college)
Ordained deacon 10/6/1750 at Archiopiscopal House, Bishopthorpe.
Appointed curate at Crosstone 11/6/1750, nominated by George LEGH.
Ordained priest 17/6/1753 at St Peter, York. (noting Oxford, Brasenose again).
Appointed rector 15/5/1769 at Passenham, Viscount Charles MAYNARD as patron.

The death of a curate named LAW at Crosstone on 20/2/1769 is linked to this John LAW, but I don't understand why it says "Curate" and not "Rector"/ "Priest". And I'm not sure why the last entry of rector at Passenham is linked to this John LAW.  :-\

Possibly:

"LAW, John, s. William, of Langfield, Yorks, pleb. BRASENOSE COLL., matric 11 April 1747, aged 20"

from "Oxford University Alumni"

This John Law seems to be a different individual. Could he be a son of the other one, or a relative? Plurality wasn't uncommon, where a clergyman would have more than one appointment, employing a curate to run one of the parishes for him, while living in a totally different place. Worth checking to see if there's another John Law in the Alumni Oxonienses database.

It's worth a try of approaching Brasenose's archivist to see if they hold any other information; I have tended to draw blank on people this far back, but you never know.

Many thanks for your help with John Law, curate of Crosstone.  From DNA Y Chromosome tests I’ve been fairly closely related to the Uttley family in the Calder Valley area. The Curate, John, has a son John born in 1753 that matches the birth year of a soldier in the 13th MA Continental infantry listed as deserting in Sept 1781. He’s described as a weaver and from Boston. I have obtained the will of John Law, curate, but it only lists children and wife but no names.  If he was born in 1727 to William, yeoman, of Langfield there is also a record of a John born to John, householder, within a month of the John son of William.  Due to large families over many years the John, curate could possibly be my 4th great grandfather. Thanks for the information kindly provided.  I’ll attempt to contact Brazenose.
