Abbreviation in Scottish Baptism Record
« on: Sunday 03 April 22 06:52 BST (UK) »
Hi. Below is extract from 1817 Baptism Record from Muthill Parish in Perthshire. The first entry I've highlighted seems to have the words "Non Braus" or something similar; the subsequent entry has something like "N.B."; as does another entry further down the page. Any idea what this means?

I don't have time to download the image & enlarge it to look at the entries but a thought, could N.B. mean Natural Born?

Here is the rest of that page - almost all those subsequent entries have "N.B." in them. Unlikely they were all Natural Born. In one case that abbreviation appears after the father's name, but in the other cases it appears after both parents' names.
The first entry I highlighted seems to have the full words rather than the abbreviation, so the solution would lay in deciphering those words. Possibly a Latin phrase?

Some off the top of my head ideas:
Not baptised meaning not of the same church or religion, or not confirmed
Braca in Latin is trousers.  So no trousers?  But what would that mean?

Might have to wait until the Latin sleuths like Horselydown86 or Bookbox come along

I think it's New Braco.  Braco, a village in Perthshire, was established as a new community by James Masterson of Braco Castle in 1815, two years before this entry in Muthil parish register.

Yes, New Braco seems correct. Thank you.
