Help with handwriting!
« on: Friday 08 April 22 13:57 BST (UK) »
Hello. This is my last hope at finding anything out about my great grandad so fingers crossed one of you nice people can help me! After not being able to find him on any census records and possibly being born in Ireland I ordered the marriage certificate from 1932. But when it arrived it is really hard to read the writing.
Thanks in advance.

We can't see it so you will have to post a clip of what you cannot read so people can have a look at it.

What was his name and where did he marry?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Sorry I thought I had attached a picture. I'm new to this forum so apologies! I've tried again but it doesn't seem to be working when I try to attach a photo from my phone so will have to try again later with my laptop...

Yes, it's much easier on a laptop than a mobile. :)

Hi, so I have tried for over an hour to upload the photo with no success. I have tried on my phone and laptop, the file size is less than 500kb, I've tried changing the format between pdf/png/jpeg etc. I've tried uploading different files other than the one I actually want and it still doesn't do anything. It doesn't come up with any error messages, it just doesn't appear.

So anyway, I'm going to post a link to the photo on my google drive and see if that works.

The marriage was in Suffolk, so the residence is probably a location in Suffolk. I've got an idea of what it says for the father's name but I want others opinions first to confirm it without me influencing what they see - if that makes sense!

My take-

Blackdown, Surrey (or Sussex)

https://wikishire.co.uk/wiki/Black_Down,_Sussex

Researching: Cuthbertson – Co. Derry, Scotland & Australia; Hunter – Co. Derry; Jackson – Co. Derry, Scotland & Canada; Scott – Co. Derry; Neilly – Co. Antrim & USA; McCurdy – Co. Antrim; Nixon – Co. Cavan, Co. Donegal, Canada & USA; Ryan & Noble – Co. Sligo

Ooh thank you. That is interesting and it does look like it says blackdown. I just thought it would be in Suffolk not Surrey/Sussex. It also looks like it says _____ in Suffolk for the profession? So why would his job be in Suffolk but his residence in another county?

I read the profession as “sergeant 1st Suffolk” which I assume would be army?
