Great grandfather's real father checksfield
« on: Monday 18 April 22 11:59 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone.
My great grandfather, a Charles Rablin checksfield born 25/12/1904
. His mother was a Naomi Ruth Yates. On the 1911 and 1921 census it has Horace James checksfield who Naomi married in 1909, with Charles as his stepson on both.
Do you think Charles was illegitimate or could there be another father? Other wedlock people in my tree have eventually  said son, but to still say stepson in 1921?

Hi there

I would get a copy of his birth certificate to see what is on there.

Was he born as just Yates?

Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

On the birth index he is under Charles rablin Yates. I'll order a certificate and hope there is something there..

Just found this transcript of a baptism
Charles Rablins Yates
Baptised 29 January 1905
Leysdown Kent
Father Homi Yates
Mother Ruth

FindMyPast has image of baptism record
The word transcribed as Homi is actually Naomi. So it reads as parent: Naomi Ruth Yates. No father mentioned. I would look into the middle name Rablin, might be father's surname.

There's a Charles Edwin Rablin buried in Sheppey on 1 Sep 1905. Age at death means born about 1883. Can't find him in 1901, but Naomi Ruth was a servant in Sheppey in 1901. Could be a contender. Charles Edwin comes from Portsea, Hants.
