I've observed that the O.P. has been back in several times , but made no further comments.

I m not yet  convinced the 1881 & 1901/1911 is the same family unit.
I think the 1897 birth cert is a must, it could be that "niece" is not 100% accurate in the modern sense.

1881 census, Berrick Prior

Thomas Crook, head, 46, ag lab, Berrick
Susan, wife, 41, Berrick Prior
Elizabeth Ann, daughter, 13, Berrick Prior
Melvina, daugter, 11, Berrick Prior
Ada, daughter, 9, Berrick Prior
John, son, 7, Berrick Prior
William, son, 5, Berrick Prior
Albert, son, 3, Berrick Prior
Theresa Betsey, daughter, 1, Berrick Prior

One more child, Maria, born 1881.

Look like Albert is the cousin with the family in 1901.

Richard Crook married Mary Hicks
They had several children including Thomas (1805) and Abraham (1822)

Thomas married Jane Low and had several children including son Thomas (1834) who married Susan Roberts and were the parents of Albert and Theresa Betsy

Abraham was the father of John (as above)

so Abraham and Thomas jnr were first cousins, Albert and Theresa were John's 1C1R and Theresa's illegitimate daughter with Jhn's family in 1911, was 1C2R, so "niece" wasn't used in the strictest sense.

I agree birth cert is essential, Edith could just as easily be another daughter of cousin Theresa as that of one of John's sisters.

First of all, many thanks for the interest and help and for all the replies received.

Yesterday, local library with access to Ancestry I found and downloaded the following marriage certificate : 6 September 1914, St Mary's  Church, Spring Grove, Hounslow: John Edward Collins age 22 (b.1892) father John Edward Collins, labourer, residing 18 Railway Terrace, Feltham and Edith Maria Crook aged 18 (b.1896) father John Crook, labourer, residing The Vicarage, Spring Grove.

This appears to tie in with Sloe Gin's census input at 21.29 last night.    Edith's named father John Crook was in fact her uncle.

Our conclusion is that she's just as likely to be a 2nd cousin once removed as much as a niece.
UNTIL you get the birth certificate do not jump to any conclusions!

Pauline: Thanks for your robust but constructive help.  I'm unclear  just who is included in 'Our' conclusion but take note of  your advice about who Edith may or may not be.   I think this matter is now closed.

One other suggestion, Gerry.
If you can find Edith's baptism it should confirm who her mother was.

But you would need to be looking at Oxfordshire, not Berkshire.
Wallingford was in Berkshire before the 1974 boundary changes, but the Berrick villages are and have always been in Oxfordshire.  The old county boundary was the Thames.
So it might be worth asking on the Oxon board if anyone has access to the parish registers for those villages.

Ancestry have got Oxfordshire parish registers
But Newington (for Berrick Prior) only up to 1869
Baptisms of children of Abraham and Rhoda Crook are there, including
John, 17 May 1857, abode Berrick
Emily, 27 June 1869, abode Holcombe

In 1911 Edith's birth place is Wallingford, Berkshire.
Transcripts from Wallingford are on findmypast, but not that far.

For info, the Herts marriage mentioned earlier
Emily Crook married Frederick Arthur Margrave, 31 July 1897, Boxmoor.
She was 28, spinster, domestic servant, father Abraham Crook, Gardener.
Residence for both Boxmoor.
Marriage was witnessed by John Crook and two Margrave ladies.
