1921 Census: Address in Norton, North Yorkshire
« on: Monday 18 April 22 19:13 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help and translate the address in the 1921 Census?

I believe the address is 6 Commercial Street in Norton.
However, not sure of the text after the number "6" but presume it could be the name of the property?

All suggestions are appreciated.

Looks like "Freer". On Commercial Street there was an establishment named Freer Family Butcher. Could that be related?

It could be 6 Freers Yard and Commercial.
From the 1911 census description from that area:

It looks like 6 Freers Yard, Commercial (Street) although 'Street' has been omitted as if to be common knowledge.

In my experience, that sort of address which looks to us to be 2 different street/place names, was a sort of courtyard (enclosed) off a main street, a sort of cul-de-sac which had numerous tenements with only one entry/exit.

Quite often I've seen the same sort of thing with wording such as Freers Yard, off Commercial Street.

Hi All,
Thank you for all your help.

I have had a look and found it.
There are still small cottages for sale down the lane in the rear yard area.
