What does co mean

Hunstanton, co. Norfolk

The early records use this a lot, what does it actually mean, the co. inbetween the two others words.

Hunstanton is a lovely seaside town in Norfolk.
Nearest beach for us to go to about 2 and a 1/4 hours drive.
