« on: Wednesday 20 April 22 23:15 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me the name of this place - maybe a farm- near Langholm or Staplegorton on this Baptism of Matthew Lyttle in 1670
Any other wording would be gratefully received too.

Thank you

Looks a bit like Stronholm and the mother's name like Miriam.  But I am no expert!

January 30

The sd day Matthew Lyttle son lawful to William Lyttle
Steenholme bapt. Wit. John Hope in Holmehead & andrew Irving yr

sd = said
bapt. = baptized
Wit. = Witnesses
yr = there, i.e. also in Holmhead

The following link takes you to a 17th century map showing Holmhead (Hoomehead) by the riverside, north west of Langholm (Langhoome). Steenholme will be somewhere in the area. A holm is a piece of flat, fertile land beside a river. Presumably Steenholme would appear later as Stoneholm or Staneholm.

The link below is to a 19th century map which shows Staneholm Scar. The Lyttles' holding must have been in this area.

Wit. John Hope...

Looking at the p in bapt. I wonder whether the witness might be John Hone or perhaps John Hogie?

Against the latter is that there's no dot over the i.

A g for comparison would be useful.

ADDED:

There's Irving of course.  So probably not Hogie.

I checked the index on ScotlandsPeople for baptisms in Langholm with surnames starting with H and there is a contemporary John Hope fathering children.

Thank you all for your help with unscrambling the writing and the maps.

I have two other Baptisms in the area which I need help with the place names. I have tried to look at where they may be on the maps but will need help. I shall put them on separately.

Much appreciated.
