Bundle of found photos. Date by Fashion?
« on: Saturday 23 April 22 18:48 BST (UK) »
Recently found some photos in a family recipe book. The original writer b1889, they may or may not be connected to her. (you may need to scroll if viewed on a phone or narrow screen to see photos on right)
The subjects are unknown and do not resemble known family members. Have speculated as to what they contain. Thoughts are that they are contemperaneous. Appear to be shot outdoors and printed on thin card, half postcard size ( all backs are blank save one which has "Post C.."(ard) on the back )
The girls appear to be in Sunday best ( could somebody date the fashion?) including some white shoes. We love the gloriously informal final picture where someone is enjoying a tasty treat. Something I have not often seen in older photos.
Any comments would be appreciated whilst we look at where to seek further information.

(We wonder whether perhaps they date to the opening of a church in 1912 ( or some church event thereafter ) - St Gabriel's in Ashton u Lyne, which was attended by the books owner.)

 Thank you.

I’d say some are Edwardian to early George V.
The lady seated with  the  high waisted skirt  for example.
The little girls too .
How lovely ,hope you get more definite info.
Viktoria.

Interestingly though the background looks the same in the first two photos the girls dress is different.
It may not be the same girl ? It’s hard to tell in the second as her hat casts a shadow on her face.

The fourth one is taken indoors and is a different dress to the first two. I just love the knickerbockers showing  ;D

The last one is just wonderful, I forget our ancestors were just normal people doing everyday things, they always look so prim and scrubbed up due to the rare occasion of having their picture taken.

It’s so unusual to see such a natural photo of everyday life.

Viktoria.
This covers the period we are guessing. Can anyone hazard whether they might be pre-war or not?

Having spent a bit of time looking at them, I do wonder if it is the same girl. Has she been photo'd as she arrived in best hat and pinafore and later having removed top layer and hat. There is a little bit of hem showing through that seems to match the other photo (both skirt and sleeves).  Would this have been a likely way to have dressed? ( I'm not that familiar with the ordering of pinafores and petticoats nor of the propriety of removingthem in public!)
The girl with the knickerbockers is clearly different. A sister maybe.

The naturalism of the last photo is indeed delightful. The photographer clearly enjoyed a frivolous moment (despite the expense of photography) . It only showed up so well after I had rebalanced the contrast levels of the picture as the original photo was very light.
There is a suspicion of whom it might be, that would push the date to maybe 1905.

Girl holding flowers has slightly shorter hair than the other.
Were the women sisters? Or mother & daughter? Face of woman in dark outfit seems older than woman wearing white blouse.

I too believe them to be Edwardian and with the exception of the girl holding the flowers, they were probably all taken at the same time as the backgrounds are the same.
Could if be a bible reading class I wonder, I think the girl is the same except for the one holding the flowers which seems to be the odd one out.
Preparing for a confirmation maybe.

I think the girl with the flowers could be the same girl at a younger age.
