Struggling to join the dots - Davies, Griffiths & ??
« on: Saturday 23 April 22 20:28 BST (UK) »
I'm hoping that someone can help me with the first two women below - full list of questions at the end!

1861 at Black Lion Court, Merthyr Tydfill – RG9/4053/87/19
Gwenny Griffiths 31 Widow b Aberdare, Glamorgan
Ann Davies 32 Sister in Law b Pembroke, Pembrokeshire
James Davies 8 Nephew b Aberdare
Ann Davies 4 Niece b Merthyr Tydfill
Morgan Davies 2 Nephew b Merthyr Tydfill

1862 New York passenger list for the ship Bridgewater
Wm Davis 33 collier + Ann 41 wife, James 9, Ann 6, Morgan 4

1870, Minersville, Meigs, Ohio
Ann Davis 50 b Wales
James 17 Coal Miner b Wales
Ann 14 Helps at Home b Wales
Morgan 12 Works in a Coal Bank b Wales.

I’m fairly certain that Ann’s husband, William, is the son of Morgan David/Davies born c1808 Aberdare, as he had moved to Minersville around 1858 and is boarding with Ann in Meigs in 1880.

In 1851 Morgan is in Sirhowy, Bedwellty (HO107/2448/810/28), and I think William may be fairly close by in Lethbidge Terrace, Victoria, Bedwellty (HO107/2448/631/18).  Not sure where William is in 1861.

‘Gwenny Griffiths’ from the 1861 census is probably William’s sister, Gwenllian Davies, baptised Aberdare 22 Oct 1826 (Anglican).   William’s 1829 birth is in the non-conformist (Baptist) records under the surname David.

Looking for help with the following ‘missing pieces’

> Gwenllian/Gwenny in any census before or after 1861
> Marriage between Gwenllian & Mr Griffiths
> Ann’s maiden name
> Ann’s marriage to William Davies/Davis/David
> William's whereabouts in 1861
MORGAN: Glamorgan, Durham, Ohio. DAVIS/DAVIES/DAVID: Glamorgan, Ohio.  GIBSON: Leicestershire, Durham, North Yorkshire.  RAIN/RAINE: Cumberland.  TAYLOR: North Yorks. BOURDAS: North Yorks. JEFFREYS: Worcestershire & Northumberland. FORBES: Berwickshire, CHEESMOND: Durham/Northumberland. WINTER: Durham/Northumberland. SNOWBALL: Durham.

Gwenny wasn't born until c1831, so those weddings wouldn't work, would they?

I'm wondering about

Marriages Q1 1854
Merthyr Tydfil    Vol 11a   p434

Davies    Gwenllian
Griffiths    William
JONES    Rachel
Owens    Owen

She was baptised in 1826, so if it is her then the 1861 is a good few years out - but that's certainly possible since Ann is shown as 32 but a year later on the passenger list she's 40  ::)

I can't find Gwenllian under either Griffiths or Davis/Davies/David in 1851, so can't even narrow down an approximate year for her marriage.

I've sent off for so many speculative certificates for this family I may have to declare bankruptcy before too much longer  :-X
