What is listed as the occupation?
« on: Sunday 24 April 22 15:23 BST (UK) »
Hi folks,

I need some help working out what some details say on a census record.

It's the Michael Beaven in question. I have this so far:

Shaftebury St, ...... house

Michael Beaven, unmarried, 29, ...... to the ...., Wiltshire, Salisbury

I'd be interested to know what it says about the head of the house and his wife too. I'm not quite getting what it says though. I think it says governor of a workhouse... maybe.

Thanks!

Porter to the Union  :-\

Added:

Wife = Matron

Husband = Governor the Union Workhouse Fordingbridge

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Union House.  Union Work House.

I would also say Porter.

Wife is Matron.

What year census was that please?

In 1871 there is a William Dewson master of workhouse Fordingbridge Union.

Ah the bit underneath the occupation looked like **bridge so maybe that was Fordingbridge too  :)

Thanks so much for the info folks. :)

That's the 1851 census. I'm trying to track an ancestor back. I have the census records for him from 1861 but not 1851 and 1841 yet. Well, hopefully that's the right 1851 record for him lol.

Hopefully, Michael Beaven isn't listed on the 1871 census?

EDIT: Well, he doesn't appear on the 1861 census so that's good.

Do you mean he doesn't appear in 1871 so has died between 1861-1871  ???

No, he got married in 1851 and was then a bricklayer. He lived until 1889. Just good to see the 1851 is hopefully the same person. Just before he got married.

Have you got the marriage certificate to see what his residence/occupation was at the time?

If those details match the 1851 census that would be further proof he is the right man.

He is certainly elusive in 1841  :-\  but at 20 could be out on his own working anywhere.

The marriage should name his father and witnesses could be relations also to help with his family.
