Can anyone discern what occupation Thomas Gameson, of Trevethin, Monmouthshire, in the 1841 census had? And what does the tick mean in the column headed "Whether born in Scotland, Ireland, or foreign parts"?

Occupation is  Ind. / "Independent Means"

so living off savings/investments

I think the tick is from when the numbers were being tallied.
