Carter
« on: Wednesday 27 April 22 09:48 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am looking to try and trace any Carter's, I understand that London was the epicentre for this name.
William Carter married Mary Stafford in 1861, his father William Carter was a coachman, his son a groom, they lived at Grosvenor Mews, which is now Bourdon Street.

After having 3 children with William, they split?

I can't seem to find out what happened between Mary and William as the next event seems to be she was with James Cowley and has 2 more children, one of which is my great grandfather James.
More of a twist is that he changes his name to Carter from Cowley and that is what my maternal side was known by ever since!

TIA
Carter

Welcome to rootschat

I see that William & Mary married after the 1861 census.  Where do you have the family in 1871.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
A tricky one to trace this.
It looks to me as though William remarried
St Stephens Westminster 15 aug 1867
William Carter bach 26 coachman 101Vauxhall rd  father William Carter coachman
Ann Spencer spinster 20 101 Vauxhall Road John Spencer butcher
wit George Arthur Smith and Mary Ann Jackson

Children -Annie Elizabeth 19.5.1867 bapt 5 Feb 1871 ,William John 1.11.1870 bapt 5 Feb 1871 at same church.Omnibus coachman and Frank born June 1872 St George Hanover Square

1871 seems to find them at 100 Horseferry Road
William Carter 33 coachman Paddington
Ann 25 Derbyshire
Ann E 2 Westminster
William J 5 months Westminster

I gather his youngest child with Mary was born Sept qtr 1865 so if it is him, he was quick of the mark.
They then seem to disappear

ps (the elder two children William and Elizabeth Carter are with their Stafford grandparents 1871 and Mary is visiting in Hertfordshire).
pps looks like Frank a clerk 40 Molyneux St married 13.5.1901 St Mary Bryanston to Louisa Elizabeth Payne ,father deceased William Carter bus driver.

Than you for the replies

I have James Cowley Carter B: 1883 in Macclesfield, my great grandfather, his father was James Cowley 1842 Cheshire, his father was James Cowley was B: 1816 in Dublin Ireland married MAry Williams from Moneygall (Renamed OBAMA County)

It is the Carter part that I am struggling with from the marriage in 1861 in St George Hanover Sq, having 3 children William 1862, Elizabeth 1863 (Married Charles Orme) Louisa 1865 married Aaron Simpson.

Then I find them with Alice Carter Cowley 1880 (now with James) and my ggf James 1883!
It's the bit in the middle around 1871/divorce/death that I can't seem to nail down.

Thanks
Carter

CARTER, CHARLOTTE

The 1871 census for South Keppel Mews seems to end at number 32 so they may have been missed if they were still there.

You've got me intrigued!

I have a wedding (4 June 1854 in Bethnal Green) with William Carter, Coachman, given as the father of Mary Ann Amelia (widow). I'm not convinced that he was actually the father though.
