What does this cause of death mean?
« on: Thursday 28 April 22 20:50 BST (UK) »
The cause of death for this 84 year-old blacksmith from Crediton in Devon appears to be "hydrothoray", although I'm not sure of the first letter or two.

Can anyone please tell me what the word is and, more importantly, what this diagnosis from 1843 actually meant?

Many thanks,
                    Peter

Could it be hydrothorax? Excess of serous fluid in the pleural cavity. It can be a secondary condition to congestive heart failure or kidney failure.

Hi Hillhurst.

That makes total sense. I'd suspected that but wasn't sure whether it was a known condition 180 years ago. Thank you for your quick reply.
