Ann MATTHEWS in Abbey Rd, Brighton
« on: Saturday 30 April 22 08:51 BST (UK) »
This relates to an old thread here. https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=833172.0

Having finally found my elusive Ann Matthews, widow, who died at 15 Abbey Rd, Brighton in Jan 1911, at the age of 73, I am wondering when she moved into the area, as she was in Sutton Coldfield in the early 1900s.

She was on the electoral roll when in the Sutton Coldfield area so perhaps she was on one for Brighton?

I also wonder if she or her daughter Alice Maud Crook (b 1882) appear in any postal/Kelly's directories. And her grandson John/Jack Campbell (b 1897) might appear in school records if the three of them moved into the area when he was still of school age.  Or local newspaper records?

As I don't live anywhere near Sussex I'd be grateful for any help please.

Thanks.

What name do you see for informant on the death certificate?

What cause of death is recorded?

The informant is her daughter Maud Crook present at death, and cause is hemiplegia (so half paralysed - probably a stroke), glucosuria (high glucose in urine, possibly diabetes) and exhaustion. Certified by W D Calvert LRCP

Cause of death sounds as though Ann MATTHEWS was needing care before her death.

15 Abbey Rd, Brighton - is this the residential address for daughter Alice Maud CROOK?.

Using Ancestry I am not seeing Alice Maude CROOK in Brighton, Census 1911.

No by the time of the census, Maud and John Campbell were in Maida Vale in London (see the earlier thread).  Of course there's no way of knowing if they were already living there but as they were with Ann Matthews in the early 1900s as a family, I imagine they all moved to Brighton together.  Hard to know.

So really any hints about any of them living in Brighton would help fill in the gaps.

Are there any archived school records for Brighton for the period 1903-11, does anyone know?  I'd like to find John (Jack) Campbell born 1897 at school if I could.

Edit.  And electoral rolls to find Ann Matthews.

The earliest electoral roll for Brighton I can see online is 1909.
Abbey Road fell into the Kemp Town ward at that time (renamed 1908) - there is no entry for No. 15 under Divisions 1 or 2 or Lodgers. (FindMyPast doesn't appear to lend itself to readily checking Div 2 and Lodgers).

Kemp Town ward pops up as King's Cliff Ward in 1911, again no entry for No 15.

No 15 first appears in 1913 and shows the occupier as John Hodsoll - the John Hodsell to be found on the 1911 Census.

Note - I haven't done much searching of online electoral rolls. I am far more comfortable with the "real thing" ie. leather bound ledgers and not based on name!!

Thanks for that info - useful even though the name wasn't there.  I have no idea when she moved to Brighton other than she was on the electoral roll in the Birmingham area for 1903-4.  She may have been elsewhere in Brighton before she died, or even in a different town. She died before the 1911 census was taken.
