GEDCOM
« on: Saturday 30 April 22 12:05 BST (UK) »
I am totally confused about gedcom. I want other people searching their families to be able to see the trees I have created for me and my family, which are on myheritage. Do I have to do something to make the trees on myheritage visible to other people (including people not using myheritage), or does it happen automatically?

A Gedcom file is simply a specialised text file.
It is used to transfer data (i.e. export and import) between FH software.

The Gedcom file has to be imported into another software package.

If you have a tree on My Heritage, it's usually only available to members.

I think trees on My Heritage  use Family Tree Builder software. You can import and export trees as Gedcoms though.

Hmmm... I'm obviously not understanding something. All the links I follow seem to tell me how to IMPORT a gedcom file INTO myheritage, but they don't say how to CREATE a gedcom file so that people using other programs (Ancestry &c) can import my tree FROM gedcom into to their tree - or at least be able to view it and see if they and I are tracing the same ancestors (i.e. if our trees converge).
Putting it elsehow, the links don't seem to tell me how to create a gedcom file for other people to view or import.

I had to play around for a couple of minutes as I've not exported for a good while.

PS - you'll have to send the Gedcom that you've created to other people.  Also, when you change it, you'll have to export it again.

Thank you. I tried that but couldn't make it work. However, with your kind urging, I shall give it another whirl. It seems a good way to winkle out other people who are tracing the same converging line and who have got beyond the impasses I have come up against (in every case some time in the 1700s).
