Eskilson - Sweden
« on: Wednesday 04 May 22 21:32 BST (UK) »
I discovered that my 4th Great Grandfather, Andrew Eskilson, may have attended Greenwich Hospital School from 1828. His father, A Swedish sailor, also called Andrew Eskilson, served in the Napoleonic wars. Which is how he earned a place at the school.
Please could you advise where I can possibly find records of his time at the school?
I have obtained copies of the admissions papers from the National Archives. But I am trying to find out more about him. As he didn’t become a Naval serviceman, and instead spent his entire life moving up and down England as a sail maker and comb maker. Settling for no longer than a year in each place, before moving on. And never moved back to London.
Any advice you could give would be gratefully received.

Question for clarity: What other info are you trying to ascertain about his time at school?

Looks like he entered the GHS in 1823.

Yes I have obtained copies of the papers, I guess I would like to know if he completed his time at the school. Andrew was born in 1815 in Cable st London, and baptised in 1818 at St George in the East Church. Mother: Mary Eskilson nee Lane.
The admission papers are dated 1828, so he would have been 13 yrs old at the time of joining GHS. On the papers his his father is listed as dead. And he was living with his mother and sister, Jane Eskilson, in Denmark Road in St George in the East parish.

From what you say, it seems you have found the available records at the National Archives. You also appear to know what occupation your ancestor went into, and where he moved around across the country.
So it is not clear what else you are looking for.

You might be interested in this site which has some interesting social history about the usual routine for students at the Greenwich Hospital school, even though the date is later than your period of interest.

TNA online record states "Sent for by the school 9 August 1823". So is that when he entered GHS?
What info is included in the record from TNA? It's described as 4 documents.

I’d like to be able to start going a bit further back in my ancestry research, so need more info on Andrews father. But being from Sweden it’s not easy. I thought maybe there would be info in the school records. But it seems maybe what I’ve found from the National Archives is all there is.
Thank you both for your help.

Please could you advise where I can possibly find records of his time at the school?

The school moved to Holbrook in Suffolk in the 1930s and has retained its own, very extensive archive. I seem to remember they don't have any pupil records from that early period, but you could try contacting them to ask?

According to TNA's record, the parents married in 1800. Have you found a marriage record yet?

Also, have you see this newspaper report? Is it connected to your family?

Shipping and Mercantile Gazette
19 February 1870 (page 6)
"Andrew Eskilson, Seaman’s boarding-house keeper, yesterday appeared to answer summons at the instance of Charles Engstrom, a Seaman. Both men are foreigners, and It was alleged..."
