What info is included in the record from TNA? It's described as 4 documents.

Often these packages include a letter of application, some details of the father’s naval career, a baptism certificate for the child, details of the parents’ marriage, and a supporting letter from a local clergyman (or other such person) confirming that the child is a suitable ‘object of charity’. But not necessarily all of those.

According to TNA's record, the parents married in 1800. Have you found a marriage record yet?

Also, have you see this newspaper report? Is it connected to your family?

Yes Andres (Andrew) Eskilson (Senior) married Mary Lane at st George in the east church 1800.
I’ve never seen that newspaper report, but Andrew Eskilson (junior) died in 1858 in Oxford. So it couldn’t have been him. He was buried using one of his alias names John Gilbert. Also, Andrew Gilbert and John Eskilson. Maria Gilbert was his partners name. They never married but had 11 children, up and down the country. Only 3 lived to adulthood. Born in workhouses and lodging houses.
Something in the gut tells me they were running and hiding from something. I wondered if maybe he had gone AWOL after leaving Greenwich Hospital School?

Shipping and Mercantile Gazette
19 February 1870 (page 6)
"Andrew Eskilson, Seaman’s boarding-house keeper, yesterday appeared to answer summons at the instance of Charles Engstrom, a Seaman. Both men are foreigners, and It was alleged..."

With aliases and going from town to town, it sounds like you have your work cut out for you.

Could this man be a relative of Andrew's father (the ship carpenter)? If so, perhaps this 1814 will provides details of where the family are from.

They were probably simply running away from poverty - constantly on the move because they could not afford rent, relying on the workhouse, and looking for any work that may come their way.

Considering that you are looking for the family going back in Sweden, I wonder if you might get some help or specialist interest by changing the title of this thread to something like "Eskilson - Sweden".

This could well be a relative, I’ve just downloaded the will, but it’s not very ledgable, I will print it out and go through it later to see if it is. Thank you for this! :)

Andrew Eskilson baptism in 1818 (born 29 May 1815) , gives his father occupation as a ship’s carpenter.

So I do know that just after he was imprisoned, he was prest from the Maria Tender 2 Ship and put on the HMS Temeraire. Then the HMS Canada. But he was discharged from the Royal Navy in 1807. For being Swedish, as there was a conflict of interest between England and the Baltic states at the time.
He enlisted on the HMS Barfleur in 1811 but under an alias name. Which apparently was common.
So he died sometime between 1815 - 1823, but I cannot find a death record for him anywhere. Nor his wife Mary or any marriage or death for his daughter Jane Eskilson.

Yes there’s the marriage certificate and a brief outline of a couple of ships he served on. That’s about it. I contacted someone who researches Napoleonic wars and they gave me some more info about the ships he served on and when he was discharged from the Navy.
