'The Retreat' Mere - Wiltshire
« on: Monday 09 May 22 14:07 BST (UK) »
Hi
Can anyone help in showing me towards records about 'The Retreat' in Mere, Wiltshire, mainly the children born there.

My Grandfather, Derrick Rowland Haywood, was born there on 6 Jan 1921, and I believe he was abandon there as according to the 1921 census, he is still there and his mother, Florence Lilly Haywood, who originally from Newton Abbot, Devon, is now living in Buckinghamshire as a servant.

I have recently found my Grandfather, in the 1939 census, living with a couple, Mr and Mrs Munday, in Woodmancott, Basingstoke, even though the census states the name as Derick Hayward, I know from stories from my day and his siblings that they went to see a Mrs Munday sometime in the sixties.

What I really want to know, would there be any records indicating whether a child was raised and educated in the town of Mere before being sent off to a foster/adoption family.

Thanks in advance
Paul
