Beginner searching for Henry Treavers
« on: Monday 09 May 22 19:51 BST (UK) »
Hello
I'm fairly new to family history, I've come across my first tricky person and I'm not sure what to do.

I had expected his name to be Henry Travers but I eventually found him and his wife and children under the name of Treavers.

He was married in 1871 in Fergushill, Kilwinning, to Janet McDonald. Parents showing as unknown. They appear as a growing family in census records after that time. His son was my great-grandfather and the family has been Travers from that point on.

In census records Henry gives his birth details as 1848 in Barrhead, Scotland, but I can't find a single record of him or any likely parents before his marriage.

Where do I look? Is he a dead end? Am I giving up too easily? I'd appreciate any tips on how to move forward from here, any clues on how and where to look.

Thank you

Welcome to Rootschat   :)

I can only see transcripts of Scottish censuses. You would need to use https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ to search for records. You need to purchase credits.

1851 census shows:
Henry Travies 3 yrs, a Pauper living in Neilston, Renfrewshire. He is transcribed as ‘Nurselina’ . Perhaps that should be ‘nurse child’?
He is with Margaret Deans, 65 yrs who is described as (pauper) Nurse

1871 transcription
5 Smithy Row, Kilwinning

Henry Fravers, 22 yrs , Coal miner b ‘Benhead’ Renfrewshire
Lodging with Allardice family

You would need to find a baptism record for Henry as civil registration did not begin until 1855.
Scotland’s People have church records but that depends on him being baptised.

How on earth do you guys find this so quickly? Wow. I've been messing around for weeks and getting nowhere.

Poor wee Henry Travies, whether he's mine or not. I have a Scotland's People account, I'll look for him there.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

The original reads 'Pauper nurseling'.
