Occupation
« on: Wednesday 11 May 22 07:04 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I have a 1851 census for one of my ancestors that lists his occupation as Paline - Waker, does anyone know what this is? on the 1841 census his occupation was listed as a Wright which I thought was to do with carpentry maybe.

Can you post a clip? I wonder if the last word is actually "maker".

One of the badly transcribed options that came up when I searched the 1851 with Paline as a keyword was “Pawn Broker”!

A snip or details of the census in question would help.

This is the attachment giving the description. I have found an Genealogy for old words that has Waker as a person that wakes up workers for early shifts ,which probaly makes sense. The description of Palin Waker was on the Ances.com census which I think is copied from Scot.People

Yes, Paling Maker.
The "M" on the lowest entry is exactly like the "M" in the first column, and the "g" is clearer here too.
