Son of Thomas & Mary Ward
« on: Wednesday 11 May 22 18:04 BST (UK) »
My 4x great grandfather John Ward was baptised in Shepshed, Leicestershire baptism records show the date was 06 july 1807 , the entry reads son of Thomas and Mary his wife. The marriage records show Thomas was married on 13 Jun 1806 but it doesn't show a spouse's name or age. I've searched the Shepshed (or Sheepshed) parish marriages and there are no entries for any Mary* . that fit all the other criteria. Any help would be much appreciated as ever.

Have you been looking at transcriptions or original images?

Do other marriages around that one have the bride's name? Some early marriages only have the woman's first name or even no name at all, although in my experience that's usually 1700s or earlier. It's also possible that the page was damaged and the bride's name was unreadable. An 1806 marriage would be unlikely to make note of the person's age (it varies across time periods and places mind you).

I have looked at both transcriptions and originals and most of them have a spouse's name, not really ages but at least a name. 🤔

Out of interest, where did you find the marriage?

The only marriage I can see is on 7 September 1807 in Loughborough between Thomas Ward and Mary Charlesworth.

The 1851 Census for Loughborough shows Thomas Ward (Needlemaker) born Sheepshed and his wife, Mary, born Loughborough. The ages look a little out though...

Yes I saw this one too but my Thomas says 13th jun 1806...England marriages records. I sifted through over 1,000 records woth the name Thomas Ward and Mary*... I find the wildcard very useful at times. Just not with this couple!

I can see the spouseless marriage entry on FindMyPast and FamilySearch, transcript only.

Still possible the original page was damaged or faded... or potentially whoever was writing it forgot to add her name in!

Hi,

This could the marriage, it looks like the date was mistranscribed as the thirteenth instead the thirtieth.

Thos WARD
Mary WORTHLEY  ?
both OTP
Married in this Church Banns
Thirtieth day of June, One Thousand eight Hundred and six
Both made their mark
Witnesses:  John FOXON, Wm LESTER Jun

I searched FindMyPast,  Leicestershire Parish Records Browse,  search for Shepshed without a date, the search only seems to bring up the start date for the records not dates that the records contain.

Shepshed Marriages 1791-1807,  page no.98.

Regards,
Daisy
