Hello

Hoping for help tracing a John Rees and his wife Elizabeth in the census and/or any other information on them. From his will, it states John was a master mariner and owner of a schooner called the “Elizabeth and Mary of Swansea”. He died in Llanelly on 23 Dec 1844. There are 2 John Rees deaths death registered in the GRO in that quarter, one age 49, the other age 56. I think the one age 56 is the more likely, so born around 1788. His address in his will is vague, 1 of 3 houses (2 still under construction) on the New Road from Llanelly to Cwmddyche (Furnace?)

Despite this information I am struggling to find them. It could be that John was at sea in 1841 but his wife Elizabeth should be around in 1841 and possibly even 1851. I have no information on her year of birth, also possibly around 1788.

Thank you

Found a brief reference in a newspaper article to say he was 49 when he died

Thanks. Is Elizabeth there is 1851? I think she was definitely in Llanelly in 1845 as there is a newspaper article in the Cambrian on 24 May 1845 detailing a case brought by "Mrs" Rees of Llanelly, wife of John Rees  "owner of a vessel" brought against a nephew of John's Henry Rees. Though she could have remarried and/or returned to her native Swansea. She was a wealthy widow having being left the Schooner, 3 properties (2 still being built) and £200 and therefore I am sure there would have been many potential suitors.

no Elizabeth there in 1851 either. There is a Henry Rees, butcher & publican - The Red Cow in 1841. In 1841 there's a Robert & Jane Rees, but Robert died before 1851. They would appear to be the parents of Henry

I had a look at the marriage to see the witnesses -possibly J B Philips & Martha Trick. The marriage was by licence and Elizabeth's surname recorded as Morgan.

Hello

Great finds, trying to decipher the will as it is not easy to read. However, I think this is a different Henry Rees. The Henry Rees mentioned in the article is a Master Mariner (see attached). I think this is Henry Rees (1809-1860). Do you concur? However, there is an unexpected reference to John Samuel master mariner in the will and I know of someone researching the Samuel mariners who will be definitely interested in this

Yes, different Henry. John Samuel married Anne Rees, daughter of Robert - 19 June 1827 witnesses Henry Rees & Simon Samuel.
1851 Simon is in Marine Street, next door but one to Henry Rees 41 master mariner.
