Samuel Dinenage, Canterbury

Samuel was born in Canterbury in around 1795, and died around 1855, possibly in Woolwich or Gravesend. He was my 3rd great grandfather. I know quite a bit about his life and times - he was a soldier for most of his life, fought at Waterloo in the 95th Rifles (or 95th Foot Regiment), and married a Frenchwoman, Felicity Pinnin in Versailles, 1829. I've tried Ancestry, Find My Past and Wikitree  and I can't find a single mention of Samuel's parents. Any hints on where to look would be much appreciated.

Confirmation that he died in 1855

Gives a birth year of 1795 assuming that his age at death is correct.

There could be a possibility that his surname has been corrupted and may have been Dinnage.  Where did you find the information about his marriage and how did you know that he was born in Canterbury?

I see from a pension record that Samuel's birth place is stated as being Burgate, Canterbury, Kent.

I can't seem to find a record of a baptism for him.  I wonder if it might be worth while contacting the Kent Family History Society to see if they have any baptism records for Burgate. Below is the contact page for the society:-

I suspect his baptism record may be hard to find assuming that he was baptised.

Thank you for your replies, much appreciated. Information was from Ancestry.com. and I've got plenty of information about the military side of his life - I was interested to find out that he was a "pensioner" at Woolwich Barracks, which is where I leant to ride many, many years ago. I don't know why but I'm having trouble tracking most of my father's side of the family past the 3rd great grandparents. I think I expected more information to be available about Samuel as he had a few interesting descendants - Fred Dinenage who is/was an English tv person/presenter? and James Dinenage who went down on the Titanic, body never recovered.

Looked through Marriage register for Versailles for 1829 and 1815 (suggested by some on Ancestry and closer in date to Napoleonic wars). Have also looked through 10 year tables of marriages, but not come up with anything yet. I was hoping that if I found the marriage entry, we would also have Samuel's parents' names.

I looked up baptisms for Canterbury looking for siblings
There is a Joseph Dinenage  and his wife Martha having children through the 1820's and 1830's
Joseph married Martha Ewell 9.12.1822 and they had

On daughter Carolines's marriage Joseph is Joseph Dinanage Pitt green grocer

So they have changed their name to Pitt for some reason.

And Joseph is baptised as Pitt 26.5.1799 s of Joseph and Ann Pitt at St Mary Mag Canterbury
He had a brother Samuel Pitt -entry says privately baptised at Birmingham 24.4.1795 and publically in this church 26.5.1799

Could this be your Samuel Dinenage?

There is a suggestion that Mrs  Ann Pitt wife of Joseph senior  started life as Ann Dinenage

Other Children of Joseph and Ann Pitt-Mary Ann Pitt 1.2.1801,Sophia Pitt  22.2.1803  and Mary Ann Pitt  19.8.1805 .

Re ciderdrinkers post, I too have a similar situation with a branch of my family.
My couple do not appear to have married, and their children were baptised using their mother's surname Mason. On subsequent census they variously appear as Mason or Smith or Smith-Mason. Some appear with Mason being used as middle name. Middle names were often not recorded at all or as an initial.
Another branch has a number of children baptised with their single mother's surname, but they adopted their step-fathers surname. I linked my great-grandfather's baptism to him in later life, only because he is referred to with his mother's maiden name being used as a middle name in his daughter's will.
