Adoption
« on: Monday 16 May 22 14:14 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if it's possible to order an adoption record from the GRO without knowing the name of the adopter's. I only have an original birthname. It's my aunt. Thanks.

Adoption records in England and Wales, like birth, marriage and death records, are kept by the General Register Office (GRO). There is no searchable index of adoption records online, but you can request a copy of an adoption record via the GRO’s website. To do so, you must register for a free account on the website, select ‘Place an Order’ from the options given, and fill in the form.

You will need to know the adopted child’s current age or their age at death if they are deceased; the year in which the adoption was registered; their adoptive surname and forename; and their date of birth.

No, you can't find the new adopted name from the original birth record (unless you are an authorised adoption intermediary)

Assuming you were in contact with her - she will presumably have used her adopted surname when she married.  If she didn’t marry - it will be her surname at death.  If she died after 1969 her full birthdate will be on her death cert.

If she was born before 1939 & has died - you may be able to find her on the 1939 register

Carole, Thanks for your reply.  I've never met her. She was adopted before I was born. I contacted social services a couple of years ago and paid for a search for her adoption record at the GRO but all they were able to tell me was she was alive and registered with a doctor in the UK. She'll be about 81 by now. She still has an older sister who's alive and wants to find her.
