Would there be any access to the 1950 electoral register for the Swindon area, please. The person I am looking for is no longer living.

Thank you. I don't have an address but I'm trying to place an ancestor in Swindon in 1950. He was a butcher and possibly had a shop there. I couldn't think of anyway of finding him other than on the electoral role. Any other ideas please.

Also, possibly, telephone directory, especially if he did have his own shop.  :-\
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thank you. I'm looking for Norman Dawson, a master butcher. His wife was Anna.

Did he originate from Wiltshire?  Can't see a match with a wife Ann* & that occupation on the 1939 register in any county.  No match at all for his name in Wiltshire

Swindon Local Studies Library website says they have phone books, including yellow pages, plus other trade directories. It doesn't say which dates for the directories, though it appears that the most useful Kelly's local ones (which include alphabetical indexes) didn't restart after WW2. If you can't go there, and there isn't a Rootschatter who can, an e-mail may get you some advice on what they have and what help they can offer (expect there to be a fee if it's not a quick lookup).
Researching Penge, Anerley, (incuding the Crystal Palace) and neighbouring parts of Beckenham, currently in London (Bromley), formerly Surrey and/or Kent.

No, he was born in Lancashire. I have him in 1939 but he went into the catering corps. in the army and was posted I believe to the Wiltshire area where he stayed for a while. He later moved on to Havering area in London where his wife Anna died in 1966. Norman died in Lincoln in 2002. So it appeared he travelled around. It's the middle bit that I am trying to sort out. Thank you for looking. Norman was a Butcher's shop assistant in 1939 and a Master Butcher when he died, which makes me think that was his trade when the war finished.
