abbreviations
« on: Thursday 19 May 22 09:11 BST (UK) »
26 years ago I received letters from a man whom I cannot now trace (he may have died, of course) who was tracing the Young family in the 1700s, as I am. Regrettably, he is fond of abbreviations, some of whose meanings I am unfamiliar with. They are M.I., F.C., M.C.. Can you interpret them for me, please? (I have understood his other abbreviations.)

Difficult to say without seeing them in context?

M.I. I would interpret as Memorial Inscription.  No idea on the other two, sorry.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Here are examples of the contexts. Does that help?

M.C. = Male child
F.C = Female child ?

But the last one is John and F.C. although there are several dates crossed out for this specific child. Perhaps it was Joan and not John, or perhaps they just made a mistake.

M.I. certainly looks like Memorial Inscription in this context.

Before seeing the context, I thought MC might be Marriage Certificate.  :-\ Not sure if that makes sense though now.

FC though?  ???

Added: I think Goldie’s suggestion is better.

I know I am being pedantic here, but . . . . .

MI I always knew to be Monumental Inscription ;)
