Suling

Kia ora

What is the meaning of Suling?  I cannot find it anywhere, assume it was some sort of monetary value?

Ralph de Curbespine holds of the bishop two sulings in Walwaresere.  The arable land is . . . In demesne (land) there is one carucate and an half, and fourteen villeins, with two carucates and an half.  Of this land, Robert has half a suling, and one carucate there. In the time of King Edward the Confessor, it was worth seven pounds and ten shillings, and afterwards fifty shillings, now seven pounds.  Wluuard held it of king Edward.

Any help appreciated.

Check google books for a searchable version of William Somner's "A treatise of gavelkind ...", published 1726 and search for "sulings".

Can't find a searchable google book version of Cunningham's 1771 "A new and complete law dictionary, ..." to direct you to but the entry reads -

SWOLING or sulings of land, Sulinga, Solinga, vel Swollings Terrae, in Saxon Suling from "sul" or "suth, aratrum", as, to this day in the western parts, a plough is called a Sull, and a ploughstaff a Sul Paddle. It is the same with Curucata Terrae, that is, as much as one plough can till in a year: A hide of land, though others say it is an uncertain quantity.

It looks as if this man held quite a few manors in this part of Kent after the Conquest - he was a protege of Bishop Odo.

Yes, I had looked for the book but couldn't find it on-line to look at.
In a sense what it is saying is that it too is a measurement of land.  I had curacate which was easy to find.
Somner's book sounds pretty fascinating.
Yes I do have Odo in the information I have collated.  Malmaines had lots of manors indeed.

Many thanks to you both.

This is the book you were unable to find -
https://books.google.co.uk/books/about/A_Treatise_of_Gavelkind_Both_Name_and_TH.html?id=dG9UAAAAYAAJ&redir_esc=y

Pop "suling" in "Search inside" and should return page 117.
