Chancery Date
« on: Friday 20 May 22 09:30 BST (UK) »
Dear All,

I am having great difficulty reading a chancery document from the aalt site. According to National archives the date window is 1486 to 1515. One of the people mentioned died in 1505 so the doc must be before this date. I think that the year is written in the screenshot provided. Can anyone read it?
Thanks in advance
Gigi

It's not the date, unfortunately. It reads ... And xxxvj acres of land with thapp(ur)ten(a)nces ...

You don't always get a date on the Bill itself, though it's usually on the Writ, if that's available. Do you want to post the AALT link(s) to the case, so that others can look for you?

Found it here ...

... but I think the case starts here ...

I haven’t been able to find a date on any of the membranes, but large parts are unreadable because of dirt and damage. Maybe someone else will do better.

On the back of the Writ there is a note of an order to appear within 3 weeks of the following Easter, but no year is stated.

TNA have dated the bundle (167) as 1486-1493 or 1504-1515. Given that you say one of the parties died in 1505, the earlier period seems more likely.

The Canterbury probate database lists a will for John Serlis/Serlys of Hastingleigh dating from 1477. Does that relate, perhaps?

Hi Bookbox,
Thanks for your reply. Yes I can "see" that it is not a date now :( Shame no dates on these docs. I have just started trying to read them. they are worse than wills to read! Also as you said, this one is damaged.
Also I made a mistake about the death of John I think! I was mixing him up with John Rose also of Wye d1505.
John Serlis was alive in 1502 but dead by 1517 (family will references), so both periods could be good.
I am aware of John of Hastingleigh will 1477 but have not placed him in my family. The will is in latin, I am told and he is described as junior and mentions John & Johanne Serlis (children?).
The late William Serlis, chapman of Wy is probably the one who left a will dated 1477.

I will have a look at the second chancery reference you sent me.

Thanks for looking

A will of a John Serlis comes into this, as it says three lines from the bottom:

" ... by the said last will of the said John Serlis ..."

Perhaps it is the John Serlis will referred to by Bookbox.

Hi Watson,
Ah yes, I see it! Thanks for that!

According to the site:
http://www.hastingleigh.com/hast-wills.html
There are 2 John Serlis who left wills in Hastingleigh (next to Wye).
Probate 20 Oct 1466 - mentions William Serlys
Probate 1478 - mentions John & Johanna Serlys.

Hi Bookbox,
The second reference for aalt is the same page copied again in order to show all the text.

I need to persevere and get more practice reading these old docs!

Thanks again

Gigi
