Searching for William Thompson - Paddington
« on: Tuesday 24 May 22 07:26 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out about my Great Great Grandfather - William Thompson.
The marriage certificate of his son Frederick William Thompson (b. 1872) suggests he might have lived at 53 Hampden Street Paddington, when Frederick married on 21.5.1895, & that William was a butler.

But William Thompson being such a common name I am uncertain what to do next.  I have not been able to be certain about his whereabouts in 1891 or previously and do not know the name of his wife or any other offspring.  Any guidance / help very much appreciated.

Hi
Welcome to the forum .I'm afraid as you know this is going to be tough.
It would help if you gave us more info on Frederick Willima thompson.
Do you have him on other censuses with a place of birth ?
An accurate date of birth would allow us to check Birth registers ,baptisms and school records for London .The latter usually gives a father address and when he entered a school.Siblings tend to go to the same place and this could expand the people we are looking for on the census ,etc.

Every little helps.
Where there witnesses to the marriage ? Could they provide clues? An usual name is a Godsend if they are related.

Just give us a little more please.

If Frederick married Ada Campbell, they are at 2 Hampden Rd Paddington in 1901 but no sign of William at no 56.

You may like to follow up an article in the Poor Law Unions Gazette of 10 December 1898 (and lots of other dates - same advert) - mentioning Frank Thompson (late of 2, Hampden Street, Somers Town), aged 34, and giving a physical description.  It also says he was known at 22, Stanhope Street, Euston Road, and had five children.  Presumably he had deserted his family - the usual reason for being in the Gazette.

Afterthought - probably not your man.  If he was born in 1872 he would have been c.26, not 34.

Have you considered the following birth entry for Frederick William Thompson?

Mar.qtr. 1873 Kensington, mmn Rabbetts.

I keep coming back to this one - is the only Thompson mmn Rabbetts birth listed (so can't compare to anything), Paddington would have come under Kensington, a November birth date 1872 could well have a late registration in Mar.qtr.1873.  Can't find a marriage between a Thompson and Rabbetts.

If all else fails, could be worth investing in this birth certificate.
