Two Baptisms for same person?
« on: Wednesday 25 May 22 15:37 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know why there may be two separate baptisms/christening for same name, Richard Rye in North Elmham in Norfolk. They are also same parents Row and Elizabeth Rye. One was in 1758 and the next being in 1762.

Look for an early death of the first child.
It's typically the reason.

Thank you, Pauline, there seem to be three children of the same name. Isn't that a bit strange?

There is a burial on Jun 3rd 1759 at North Elmham for Richard Rye, infant.

Thank you Brie,

And then my 5x grandfather was born in 1762 in North Elmham. Is is usual for children to be named the. same. if one dies? Not really noticed this before.

Pretty common! I have a few cases of this in my family, often within a year or two of the death of the older child.

I have at least two occurrences of double baptisms. One was where the first baptism was at home, and then a few months later in the church. Possibly because the child was sick.

The next one is more interesting. The child was baptised for the second time in another nearby church just 2 days after the first baptism.

In the first case you mentioned, the 2nd baptism ceremony may have been a supplementary ceremony, receiving the child into the church. Which denomination?
The second case may have been a baptism at a chapel-of-ease, written up 2 days later in the register at the parish or mother church.

Using the same name 3 times suggests it was a significant name, most likely a grandfather. Where did the 3 babies named Richard come in the birth order of sons born to the parents? What was Richard's father's name? Do you know names of grandfathers?
Like others, some of my families reused a name if an infant died. Most were named after grandparents. A few were named after an uncle who died young.
