Private F.G. Ellerbeck in WW1
« on: Friday 27 May 22 08:24 BST (UK) »
I should be very grateful if anyone can tell me anything (even just his full name!) about Private F.G. Ellerbeck, 17th Reserve Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force (47145). I have discovered it's a fairly unusual surname in Canada, probably of German origin, but I haven't been able to find someone with the same initials. I'm not a relative, his name has come up in the course of research for an article I'm writing. Any help very much appreciated and will be acknowledged in the article.

His army records are online, courtesy of the Canadian Government:
https://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?op=pdf&app=CEF&id=B2863-S045 (usually slow to load).

The service number matches, and the initial F = Frank, but he didn't give a middle name, at least on the attestation form. (I didn't look through the file).

His attestation form states born 1893 in Hull, Yorkshire, so a matching birth registration could well be this one:

Name
Frank George Ellerbeck
Birth
Q4  1893 Sculcoates, Yorkshire East Riding, England

Edit: On the pdf linked in the above post, on page 17 Frank is shown as Frank G. Ellerbeck.

Added: Finally!  Page 56 states full name is Frank George Ellerbeck.

Hi there, thank you for your amazingly quick response! What an impressively preserved service record by comparison with many for officers in the UK, let alone other ranks. Frank did not have a good war, injuring his ankle on the ship coming over, then contracting pleurisy and suffering shell shock after being buried alive. Thank you again for your help.

Happy to help!  Please note I edited a post after finding some pages on his record that state his full name was Frank George Ellerbeck.

A little bit of trivia.
Frank lived on Valour Road. The name was originally Pine St but was changed to honor three men who lived on the street and who were awarded the Victoria Cross in WW 1. They were Corporal Leo Clarke, Sgt Major Frederick Hall and Lieutenant Robert Shankland.
