Help Needed re Unknown Contraction
« on: Saturday 28 May 22 10:36 BST (UK) »
I am currently transcribing the Baptism register for Hexham in Northumberland. I'm working on the mid 1600s and I occasionally find a contraction I haven't come across before. it always seems to occur in the list of witnesses and I attach an example.

Can anyone tell me what this stands for?

Is it always after the same name? If so, it could be a contracted Cl (for Clerk).
The Northumberland & Durham FHS transcripts for Hexham (on FindMyPast) show that John Gardiner was the Parish Clerk in 1660.

I'd also thought it might be Clerk and went wandering off into the Clergy Database - but didn't find anything helpful there. However, your finding about the Parish Clerk is pretty persuasive.
