English Court Records
« on: Tuesday 07 June 22 05:45 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace an ancestor who was transported to Australia, arriving here in January 1835.  He was tried in the Warwick Assizes Court.

Is anyone able to provide any guidance as to how I would access these court records.  I understand this ancestor may have also been in court prior to his conviction when he was transported.

If anyone could assist it would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and Welcome.
Lovely to see someone new
You're in luck Warwickshire have an index of their assize reocrds online 1801-1900

https://apps.warwickshire.gov.uk/prisonersdb/prisoners/indexes?order=surname

If that doesn't work then Ancestry has a lot of court records and transportation documents on it's website and many Libraries have it free these days.

Give it a try  or give us a name and we'll try and help

Sometimes they make it into the newspapers.

Thanks everyone for your help.  I have tried your suggestions but unfortunately at this stage still have not gotten any further with this ancestor.  I will keep trying and really appreciate all your help.

As suggested above, if you would like to post a name and (ideally) the date of the trial at the Warwick Assizes, someone may be able to help you.

Unfortunately many Warwick Assize Court records were destroyed in antiquity. When trying to discover the facts about an ancestor convicted and transported in 1817 I found very little until I placed an enquiry on the Australia Rootschat forum, after which Aussie researchers provided a treasure trove  of information, including far more about the alleged crime than I had been able to get from the UK.

Good luck and I hope you find what you're looking for.
