Edwards, John (b. 1815-d. 1888 Briton Ferry
« on: Thursday 09 June 22 18:47 BST (UK) »
Greetings-
Looking for information regarding ancestors who remained in Wales.

John Edwards, was a resident of Briton Ferry, Wales, and was born in 1815 and died in November 1882. He was married to Mary Evans and had 8 children.  John remained in Wales.  3 children came to the USA, Mary, Ann, and William H.  Staying in Wales were David, Margaret, John, Elizabeth and Jane.

The trail stops at John, and we have no more information about his parents or any of the siblings who remained in Wales

Thank you for any assistance you can provide

If you can point me in a direction to make those connections, I would be most appreciative.  Thanks for your help.

Hi and welcome to rootschat
This looks like the marriage of Margaret Edwards 26 September 1864 ( minor)
Father John Edwards ( bargeman)
Spouse John Shinton both of Briton Ferry

This couple were in Hartlepool on later census

Possible death for Margaret Shinton 1924 age 78 years Hartlepool

marriage in 1836 so before names of fathers appeared on register

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VFZ3-CCX

witnesses David Hill & Thomas Jenkins, all signed except Mary.

Not sure about that marriage for Margaret. The John I've been looking at is a collier or banksman, not a bargeman.  edited

1841 census in Neath has possible Evans relatives as well

Margaret Shinton checks out.  She was married in Wales, and had 4 children in Wales.  She came to the US and settled in Catasauqua, Pennsylvania.  We have that info, but did not have John’s occupation as Bargeman.  All connection is lost at John (Mary’s father). We’d like to connect to his parents which may open up a path to the relatives who remained in Wales.
Thank you so much for your quick response!

so is the family I found in the census the wrong one as John isn't a bargeman? The children seem to be correct as I can find birth registrations for some of them with mother's maiden name Evans.

John Edwards head mar 55 bankman on canal
Mary wife 55
Elizabeth dau 24 general servant
Jane dau 14

John Edwards b c1815 still appears to be alive in 1884 - there's a workhouse admission record for him in 1882, 1883, and 1884. Denomination - congregational or independent,  occupation collier, or labourer in 1884

on 1871 his occupation is actually banksman on canal - so does link to barges

Haven't found him on 1881 - but maybe he went to work in the mines as the canals were dsplaced by railways
