Two of my cousins served in RAF in WW2.

I always thought that the buttons  were silver.  However, as Tomkin has said, most of the images of WW2 uniforms have brass buttons.

If you go on e-bay there are thousands of WWII RAF buttons for sale. All are brass/gold and

   described as such :D :D :D but hey, I'm a civvy ;D ;D ;D

The buttons on both the greatcoat (overcoat to a civilian) and what is know as the No.1 Home Dress, which is what he is attired in were brass and had to be polished using a product such as Brasso. A buttonstick was placed around them to keep it off the uniform. Nowadays the buttons are staybrite and do not need polishing.
