Nigeria: Gregor Aubrey Graham - later Sir
« on: Tuesday 14 June 22 17:41 BST (UK) »
Looking for any information about my Great-aunt's husband who she married in 1904 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England.
I think he must have been born about 1868 (because of ages given in all the sources quoted throughout his lifetime) in UK - maybe Scotland? no idea really.
I have discovered that in 1914 he returned to the UK from Nigeria, West Coast of Africa, according to Passenger List of Karina sailing to Liverpool so he must have already begun his Civil Service in the Nigerian Railways before this date.
From then until definitely 1927 as he was still travelling back to Nigeria after being knighted in that year.
The next source I have discovered is in 1934 when he is found to be in Kenya and his occupation is now Planter - presumably he has retired from the Civil Service due to his age.
Although I know he was in Nigeria for these 13-14 years, I have no knowledge about him during this time except that he worked for the Railways - not sure in what capacity.

Any help in tracing more information about this period of time in Nigeria would be wonderful and very gratefully received by me - so thank you all very much for reading this post.

I initiated the original post because I discovered that Gregor Aubrey Graham (aka Aubrey Gregor) - later Sir, had lived in both Nigeria and later on after his presumed retirement in Kenya and was hoping for further information about him in both countries.

I apologise if this was incorrect but I was trying to follow the advice given about research in other countries where it stated that mentioning the countries involved first was the approved system.

I am very grateful for all the help I have received so far and hope that I might hear more about his son who went to work in Uganda after first joining his father in Kitale, Kenya.

Thank you for reading this post.

Was his wife Lady Mabel Fanny? If so, there are records relating to his death on Familysearch. It states his place of birth was New Zealand in 1868. He died 18 September 1947 at Morningside Nursing Home, Pietermaritzburg, Kenya.
Usual residence was Kitale and his occupation was engineer. The value of his estate is free to view on this site.

Thank you Middlesbrough for your information.

Confusing about his place of birth and looking at the Death Notice I realise having printed it off I have now misunderstood part of it as was concerned it hadn't mentioned his younger son but now it makes sense as he had been lost in WW2.

His wife was Lady Mabel Fanny/ie/Frances - she was my Great/Grand-Aunt.

It has also informed me that his daughter married someone called Preddy - as yet haven't found any information about this marriage on Family Search, Ancestry or Find My Past though.

Thank you all for helping me find out more about my ancestors.

It would appear his sister married F. Sayer Preddy, a well known Somerset family according to the newspaper report on the death of her brother.

Death report in reply #4: Pietermaritzburg is in South Africa.

And unless his wife was a peer’s daughter, she was just Lady Graham. The form is Sir Joe Bloggs and Lady Bloggs.
