UK Death Certificates Query
« on: Friday 17 June 22 09:04 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm looking for some information with regards to how to get UK Death Certificates. I've managed to go back through a few generations using the Scotlands People site, cross referencing census records and death certificates etc which has proved useful in providing mothers maiden names etc.

Is there a recommend place to search and download UK death certificates? For example I've got a Charles Logan (occupation Cooper, born 1872) born in Edinburgh but I can see he's moved to Jarrow and then potentially Gateshead as that's where the more recent family are from.

I can see a death record in 1919 in Gateshead but not sure where I could see that death certificate to see if it matches up with the same person.

I did try a few links suggested including a government link but then it just 404's once you go through a few steps.

Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark

You cannot download free English and Welsh death certificates, but a PDF may be available via the GRO website.

Whether hard copy in post, or PDF, copies must  be ordered and paid for, again via the GRO.

The 1919 Charles Logan death in Gateshead was aged 46 if that helps. There's also one in Northumberland in Jun quarter 1941 aged 65. You could look for probate or burial records.

Edited to add: he doesn't appear to be with his wife and children on the 1921 census in Durham.

English death certificates don't contain as much detail as Scottish ones so that certificate may not be as helpful as you are hoping.

Quote
In England and Wales, a death certificate holds the following information:

date and place of death – from the late nineteenth century an address may be given rather than the name of an institution (e.g. City Hospital will appear as 77 Dudley Road)
name of the deceased
sex, age and occupation of deceased and possibly their home address
the cause of death – if there was an inquest it may be possible to obtain a copy of the coroner’s report
the name and address of informant and possibly their relationship to the deceased
If the deceased was a child or a single woman, the name of the father is shown.

From 1969 a death certificate also includes the date and place of birth of the deceased, and the maiden name of a married woman.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi

Thanks for your help. I don't mind paying as I have done to get the Scottish versions I've needed. I just wasn't sure where the best resource was to order the UK versions.

My gut feeling is that it's likely the 1919 death in Gateshead that I need as it feels more closely linked to the info I have. I had checked the names on the 1921 census and couldn't see him on it so presumed he'd died or potentially left the family. I know my grandad didn't really know him though so presumed he'd died.

I'll look into buying it tonight.

Thanks
Mark

Please don't order through Ancestry, if you have Ancestry - certs will cost much more and service is no faster. Best to stick to GRO.

You could look for him on Find My Past 1921 census if there is doubt the earlier death is wrong.

The local registrars in England and Wales will have the original registers and most can supply hard copies to overseas researchers for the statutory fee, in some cases they can supply a scan of the actual register so original signatures will be shown. GRO certificates are transcribed from information sent quarterly from the local registrars.

Local council websites will give details of how to order but can be a pain to navigate as they don't use the same layout. https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/index.php is a useful site and can be searched by county, links to many council sites and/or the registrars are given.
