Lewis family emigration to America, ca. 1740
« on: Friday 17 June 22 18:00 BST (UK) »
I am searching for information about ancestors named Lewis who emigrated from Lewes, Sussex, to Delaware around 1740. This information is from a cousin and may not be accurate, but it is all I have.

The earliest Lewis for whom I can find any record in America, without myself visiting local archives, is Samuel Lewis of Lewes, Suffolk, Delaware, probably born around 1775. If my cousin's information was correct, he would be the grandchild or great-grandchild of the Lewis who left the English Lewes around 1740.

I suppose the Lewises who emigrated to Delaware were Anglican, although I am not certain.

I am grateful for any hints.

Thank you.

I know this is not Samuel and Kent county, rather than Suffolk county, but if you read down it mentions there are papers and bibles relating to other branches.

Has all this documentation been looked at by anyone?

Added.
Perhaps that is a Scottish family of Lewises?

And the welsh ones!

I think it would be helpful if you could give a bit more detail about your family and also, how you know they came from Lewes.
Eg. What did that first Samuel name his children? Occupation?

Added.  And which Samuel Lewises you have ruled out.

Lots of PDFs to read here.

There is a Samuel Lewis senior who was a clerk of the war department

And is this the same Samuel or a different one.

“ Samuel Lewis, a son of GW’s old friend and comrade Andrew Lewis (1720–1781), was the surveyor of Botetourt County, a position he had held since 1769 when the county was created from a part of Augusta County.”

Thanks for your documentation. Unfortunately my 3 x great paternal grandfather Samuel Lewis was not the clerk of the War Department -- that would have been interesting.

Samuel Lewis was a dyer by trade. He married in 1798 Elizabeth Allardice, daughter of another dyer, Joseph Allardice or Allardyce, who emigrated from London to Philadelphia before 1767 (probably just before).

Samuel and Elizabeth had at least four children, Samuel (born 1801), Sarah (born 1802), John (my 2 x great-grandfather, born 1804), and Edward (born 1807). All four were, oddly, baptized on the same day in 1808 in Philadelphia in a Catholic church, which greatly surprised me, as I had thought my Lewis ancestors were Anglicans.

The idea that these Lewises originated from Lewes in England, and that they arrived in Delaware around 1740, is oral information from a cousin of mine in Canada. We are not in touch, so I cannot go back to confirm. In any event, I don't think she knows any more.

Thanks again for your help.
