Kingsbury Episcopi Somerset c.1800s Brown and Prankerds
« on: Sunday 19 June 22 11:25 BST (UK) »
I came across a tithe map for 1841 in which my GGGGgrandfather john Brown snr had a number of parcels of land in Kingsbury Episcopi in South East Somerset - one he left of parcel of land to a Mary Prankerds who I can find no information about her (she may have been born in Langport)  - and why would he when he was already married to someone else - and then another part of the same piece land another bit to an Edward Brown and in the 1841 poll book he is down at living in Burrow Kingsbury Episcopi - yet I can find nothing at all about him.. who are they both

Hi,

You do not say where you have the image of the tithe map from, but assume you have not actually seen the map at the Record Office, because if you had there is a book “Tithe Award Book” which accompanies the map, by looking at this you would be able to see who owned the land, who occupied each plot and the crop etc., each plot was used for.

From what I read, could be wrong, at the time of the Title 1841

Plot 39b. John Brown Snr., leased this plot from Wyndham, the length of the lease was not for a term of years but for the life of a Mary Prankerds.

Plot 39a, someone named Wheeters, leases this plot from Wyndham, Wheeters apoears to have sub let to John Brown Snr.

So John Brown, does not actually own either plot of land.  In any case a Tithe Map/award book would not give any indication of how land was to be left by an owner of such land.

You appear to have only one part of the information I.e. the map, you also need to see the book which goes with the map.

Hope this assists

Yes I have and I attached it - or so i thought  - Wheelers by the way is a profession - there was a wheelwright working on the land..but Mary Prankerds, I and the archivist says it was bought by John brown Snr - Lord wyndham owned a lot of land in the area but was heavily in debt at the time and sold off many of his plots of land.. John snr also owned in his own right a large amount of land that had nothing to do with the wyndham family right in the village.

But my question really was who was Mary Prankerds as there appears to be no record in the record books of such a lady living in KE - yes the same name in nearby Langport but is that the same woman.
Also who was Edward Brown? again nothing in the records books - as far as I can see and accept that even though I have trawled over the books over a number of years I could have missed him but there is no Edward in or nearby as far as i can tell.

The 1861 Census has a Mary Prankerd, landed proprietor, age 74, widow at The Hill, Langport.

On the 1841 Census Mary has a daughter Louise, age 25, - probable baptism Langport, 17 Oct 1814, father John, a soldier and mother Mary.
There's a marriage of a John Prankerd, 15 May 1809, Langport and a Mary Stuckey.
