John James and James Bailey imprisonment
« on: Sunday 19 June 22 22:27 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone I am trying to find out more on this please:- In the South Eastern Gazette 1832, 23 October John James and James Bailey were sentenced to 4 months imprisonment in the house of correction.

These two guys apparently had stolen a shawl, a gown piece, and two pieces calico, the property of William Byrne, at Woolwich.

As this William BYRNE could be my G G Uncle I would like to find out more about it if possible.  Was there a trial?? Was any evidence given by William (or wife Catherine??) etc.

If there is anything else that could be found that would be great.  Kind regards Dianna

Looks like William Byrne was a shop keeper .A  John Wilton was sentenced to 3 months (reported SEG on 5 July 1831) for stealing a waistcoat from him worth 1s-6d.

HI grandarog
Thanks for your reply. Could you please give me the details of what it said in the SEG please.  Was this in Woolwich?? Did it state that William was a shopkeeper?? To my knowledge he was a publican but could have changed professions or had separate business.

Did you find this on FindMyPast?? Many thanks Dianna

The detail was as I said.
Quote. from--- SEG 05 July 1831. Item 60 on Court List. John Wilton,24,for stealing a waistcoat, value 1s.6d.the property of William Byrne, at Woolwich.4 calendar months' in House of Correction
There is a William Byrne age 74 in the Bethnal Green Workhouse on the 1851 census shown as a widowed Hawker. Bn Liverpool.1777.
The items stolen would suggest he was either a Shopkeeper or Hawker.
Have you looked on Trade Directories for the time period.

I did wonder if the Army chap was your fellow when I was trying to sort out if he was a shopkeeper.Still think the items stolen appear a strange combination.
