British Navy Captain of ship Poppy drowned near China 1840-1880

Hi There,

This Family of Thomson originally of Dunn Scotland later to Berwickshire Northumberland.

Just trying to piece together the Family story

John Turnbull Thomson became a very important Pioneer surveying southern New Zealand....his brother

George Thomson a Commander of the Ship Poppy which ran between New Zealand and China......My brick wall...his other brother

Apparently another brother was also a  Captain but in the British Navy and was drowned in the Magellan straits [I understand this to be China]

Ive included a small portion, as I believe it can only be one of three below..James or Alexander or Peter

Appreciate any help..Rick in Australia

5/ Alexander Thomson born 1793 Scottish Borders, Scotland died 5 Oct 1830 Northumberland England

                       Married

                       Janet Turnbull 1797-1867......also saw her as Jane

                       Had Issue

                       6/ James Thomson born 1818 died 25 Nov 1845 India

                       6/ Margaret Thomson 1820-1900 Married George Scott Bengal India had 8 kids

                       6/ John Turnbull Thomson 1821-1884 Married Jane Williamson had 9 kids

                       6/ Alexander Christie Thomson 1823-1879 married Janet Wightman had 3 kids

                       6/ Patricia Thomson 1824-1907 Married John Clay had 10 kids

                       6/ Peter Thomson b. 1828

                       6/ Janet Thomson 1829-1878 Married Charles Borthwick  had 8 kids

                       6/ George Thomson Capt b. 1826 Northumberland UK died 1890 of heart disease age 64 Pahia Southland

                            Married 1865                                      This George was the Commander of the Ship Poppy ....could not find the Navy Captain brother that died/drowned China

                            Esther Mitchell born abt 1841 Ferrybridge Yorkshire UK died 1932 Rushine Southland NZ.
                                                   Esthers parents William Thomson b. 1801 of Pontefract and Margaret Bell b. 1811  9 kids from 1866-1880

The British Navy Captain drowned near Chile ..it was his brother on  the ship called The Poppy
Yes I have had a look but dont really understand it....ie two potentials..

James Thomson ..Master..1860...Ponemah
Alexander Thomson 1879...nothing else...coincidence or not 1879 was the same year our Alexander died
not much more the wiser really

Peter’s  baptism index is showing he could also be Patrick

Where are they all in 1841 & 1851?

I can see Janet b 1829’s marriage still in Northumberland in 1858

Where are they all in 1841 & 1851?

Found Janet 1841 & 1851.  Alexander is visiting in 1841. Otherwise no other sons present.
