Death record missing on the GRO Indexes?
« on: Wednesday 22 June 22 19:23 BST (UK) »
Searching for a death in 2009 which is in the England and Wales, Death Index, 1989-2019:

Name: Mr Ernest Heaton
Gender: Male
Last Residence: Sutton, Surrey, England
Postal Code District: Sm2
Death Date: 20 May 2009
Household members:

But is not on the GRO Online Indexes? Why is this? I had been hoping to order the death certificate.

Use GRO online to get the reference/order

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

This is the only entry for 2009 - he was b 1916

June qtr 2009 Lincolnshire 6091G Reg 1G001

He’s not the one you are looking for.

EDIT - he left a will & death date was definitely 20.5.2009.  Wonder if he died abroad & was brought back to England??

Re main topic - Ernest Heaton who died Surrey 2009

If he died abroad - would he be on the GRO index or is there a separate index for those deaths?

What am I missing?
I see "Last Residence: Sutton, Surrey", but it doesn't follow that he died there.  People can die anywhere.
Perhaps he died in Lincolnshire while on a visit or holiday.

The GRO death index only includes England & Wales.

It does not include Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Irish Republic, Isle of Man, Channel Islands or further afield to be considered abroad.

It might be worth paying £1.50 for the Grant & Will to see if his place of death was recorded there. It might not be.
