Quebec Royal Navy enrolment in the mid 1800s
« on: Thursday 23 June 22 03:54 BST (UK) »
Charles Bureau born approx 1822 in Quebec is well documented as being in the Royal Navy & was based in Portsmouth dock approx 1848-1853.
It’s not clear if Charles signed up for the RN in Quebec or England. Does anyone have any knowledge of enrolment at that time & if any records still exist.
After researching Charles’ life in England I’m trying to discover more about Charles life in Quebec.
Thanks in advance
L

There's an allotment record for him on FindMyPast naming his wife, but there's a note added which says 'has a previous allotment in favour of his mother but wishes it ....................... ?'  Can't read the last few words. Finding the earlier allotment might help, at least giving you his mother's name!

Added: service records only start for those who enlisted from 1853. Charles was killed on board the HMS London in June 1853.

Many thanks Graham, I’ll take a look Charles died in 1853 & I’m guessing had been in the RN for several years by then so might be lucky!

Hi Deirdre, ooh that sounds promising & the kind of info I was hoping for, we know a bit about his wife but have never had a parents name crop up. Any chance we can increase the size of image to decipher? Failing that will search for previous allotment record, sounds hopeful!

I’ve tried enlarging it but still can’t read the last bit sorry, but assuming it doesn’t name his mother.

I advise contributors to read through this earlier thread to avoid duplication

I read that bit as belonging to the next entry Willm Bickford. There is an insert mark.

BUT as posted on the other thread there is an 1848 allotment to a trustee in favour of a child Charles Bureau then aged 7 months

Thanks Shaun, i have now re-read the other topic; clearly reading / understanding the images of these old documents is not my forte :)
