Help with decifering a historic bond.
« on: Saturday 25 June 22 01:28 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am hoping that someone might help decifer a historic bond from 1682 which we have found in some family papers.

We are really interested to see what it might be about. Particularly as it proved a new link in my family tree. However I am finding it very difficult to decifer. Particularly as half the bond is in Latin (ha not my first language) which I cannot read at all. I cannot currently find anyone that can help.

If anyone can help particularly with the Latin sections I would be very grateful.

A great piece of family history

Thank you to anyone that helps

Be it known to all men by these presents that I, Lambert Pitches of Prittlewell in the County of Essex, gentleman, am held and firmly bound to John Lambe of Leigh in the aforesaid county, seaman, in (the sum of) two thousand four hundred pounds of good and lawful money of England, to be paid to the same John Lambe or his certain attorney, executor or assigns; for well and truly making this payment I bind myself, my heirs, executors and administrators firmly by these presents; sealed with my seal; given the twenty-seventh day of September in the thirty-fourth year of the reign of our lord Charles II by the grace of God King of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, Defender etc., and in the year of the Lord 1682.

A bond is a promise to do something, against a financial penalty for defaulting. It is normally in two halves - the Condition (in English) and the Obligation (in Latin), with standard wording. To find out what has been promised, you need to look at the English half.
