Richardsons of Moyallen
« on: Saturday 25 June 22 09:50 BST (UK) »
Hi All
I have William John Pedlow listed in 1911 census as gardener living at Ballydonaghy with his wife Elizabeth (nee Cordner). He later joined the army and died in France 1915.They had two sons.
I am trying to find a birth place and date for the said William John, have tried all searches on Irish Genealogy but no joy.
My request on this post is,since he is a gardener I presume he worked in Richardsons Estate at Moyallen, where could I find a list of employees for around that time, hoping that there would lie a pointer to where he came from.
A long shot but clutching at straws.Any other pointers would be appreciated

Good Morning
Have you got his marriage -its at Banbridge 6.8.1909 Ballymore
William John Pedlow bach full  gardner Knock John Pedlow labourer
Elizabeth Cordiner spinster Tanderagee John Cordiner labourer
wit William Bothwell and Bella Cordiner

If he's the William John Pedlow in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers died 16.5.1915 his birthplace is given as Seagre Portadown on the Remeberance Book

But I still can't see that birth .It looks like they may be methadists ,so perhaps try and track them down.

The only  birth I can see is at 5.4.1887
William John Pedlow sof John of 52 Willowfield st  and Lizzie nee McGill labourer Belfast Castleneagh.
If I'm honest I don't think it's him.

Think that should be Seagoe- which is a civil parish, R.C. parish and Church of Ireland parish in Portadown.

Starting with the 1911 census- William John & Lizzie Pedlow are living in the townland of Ballydonaghy. Both born Co. Armagh (he's listed as 28 and she as 30).
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Armagh/Carrowbrack/Ballydonaghy/298002/
You can see on this page of the census that the Richardsons do own the house they are living in (house #5 on the form)-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001589097/

Here's the actual marriage record- witness was Bella Cordener & Ballymore Parish Church (C. of I.) is in Tandragee (Banbridge is merely the registration district)-

Have you found William John in 1901 census? If his wife Lizzie was a few years older than him as indicated in 1911 census then perhaps he increased his age a bit in the census.

Will now start searching for his birth registration.

There is an outgoing passenger record for a W.J. Pedlow, aged 28, a gardener, leaving from Liverpool in March 1913, bound for Canada aboard the Lake Manitoba.  Incoming record into Canada says he is bound for Toronto looking for farm work.  He's back in England by August 1913 aged 29.  Guess he didn't find the work he was likely seeking.  Also tells us his birthday falls between March and August, and he likely was born in 1884, and the war memorial has the wrong age.  Getting his service records may be your best bet.

A large portion of WWI service records were destroyed but I think Ancestry and Find My Past (both pay sites) have what survives.

Hi All
Thanks for all your efforts. I would like to go a new direction in my hunt for William.I intend to visit PRONI  soon with the idea of looking up school registers  for about 1890 -1900. Can you help me identify what schools were in the Seagoe area at that Time?
This is hoping that records even exist.

refer to https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/publications/index-school-collections
The index includes the name of schools, arranged by parish
then look up the references in PRONI's eCat to see coverage dates.

Visited Proni on Thursday, had a look at all the school records in the Seagoe District that were available for the time period 1890 to 1900.
No sign of William John, not even a Pedlow surname.
Next visit will be local church records I think.
Fast running out of ideas.
Thanks all for your continued help
